Book Readings

Tuesday May 7, 7pm - Deborah Guyol Book Reading
Brodaway Books, 1714 NE Broadway, 503-284-1726, www.broadwaybooks.net
Deborah Guyol, the author of Pride and Prejudice and Kitties: A Cat Lover’s Romp Through Jane Austen’s Classic (Skyhorse Publishing) will be here to present her book.

This wickedly entertaining book imagines Pride and Prejudice told from a cat’s point of view. It’s a hilarious mash-up that puts a fresh, quirky spin on two things some people just can’t get enough of: classic cats and classic Jane. Accompanied by wacky photos of kitties, this clever spin on the classic narrative is sure to delight cat lovers, Jane Austen lovers, or anyone who loves to laugh.

Tuesday, May 14, 7pm - Vince Welch Book Reading
Brodaway Books, 1714 NE Broadway, 503-284-1726, www.broadwaybooks.net
Vince Welch will be reading from The Last Voyageur: Amos Burg and the Rivers of the West. Amos Burg, a native of Northeast Portland, was the first to complete transits of the free-flowing, undammed Snake and Columbia Rivers by canoe. In 1938 he became the first to navigate the length of the Colorado River in a rubber raft. In his daring explorations of waterways from the Southwest up through Canada and into Alaska, Burg is considered to be the only person known to have paddled all major Western rivers from source to mouth.

In his definitive  biography about Burg, Vince Welch (himself a professional river guide) reveals a man of charming modesty whose sense of personal honor, humor and determination made him one of the most accomplished and celebrated adventurers of his day – a man known for his boundless curiosity, capacity for joy, and generous affection for rivers.

Tuesday, May 28, 7pm - Oregon Poet Laureate Reading
Brodaway Books, 1714 NE Broadway, 503-284-1726, www.broadwaybooks.net
Oregon’s Poet Laureate, Paulann Petersen, will be here to read from her newly published collection of poems, Understory (Lost Horse Press).

As with a forest’s understory – the level of vegetation growing under its canopy – these poems bear the shadows of a darker realm. Informed by myth and archetype, Ms. Petersen’s work grows close to the earth, even reaching into realms of the underworld. This collection includes poems for a furrier grandfather, for a revered poet’s first spoken word, for Hinduism’s sensuality, for a star-map painted on a deer hide. The reader encounters a voice steeped in the music of language, a voice intent on the possibilities of poetry’s open forms, a voice indebted to the power of metaphor to transform language and the way humans see this world. Understory is Ms. Petersen’s sixth full-length collection of poems. She is serving her second term as Oregon’s sixth Poet Laureate.
